These are just some of the words and phrases used to describe what "Crunchy Mamas" think and do in their daily lives. We understand that raising our families is complex and difficult, and is unique to each family. No one way of parenting works for all, and no one method is best for everyone.
That being said, we believe that there are certain common threads that tie many women together - women who seek out more natural, homeopathic, or alternative ways of doing things. We may choose to use essential oils, spices, and raw honey to combat an illness instead of reaching for a bottle of medicine. We may choose to birth under the care of a midwife in a non-hospital setting. We may choose to refrain from spanking our children or putting them in time outs. These steps, and these attitudes and views of raising a family, can and will at time be referred to as "Crunchy" things.
In case you are wondering where the word "crunchy" gets this connotation, it gets its roots from the idea of granola, which, of course, was what hippies and other natural minded people ate all the time. (Insert eye roll here.) However, these days, many of us have embraced this phrase and wear it proudly!
You don't have to agree with and actively practice every ideal listed above, and you can most definitely practice others. Some of our mamas formula feed. Some have circumcised sons. Some have elected c-sections. But we all practice some of these ideals, and we all encourage each other in these ways. We all seek to learn more, and to openly hear what is being presented.
If some or all of these things are part of your family life, or if you want them to be, then you are a Crunchy Mama!
